Custom Dual-Pattern Deck Build
Cranbourne, Melbourne
Richard came to us through a Facebook ad wanting a proper space to enjoy his backyard. This was a bigger build than most, a full 12x8m footprint, and Richard was after something with a bit more character than a standard straight lay. We designed a custom dual-pattern layout in walnut composite decking to give it a unique look, then engineered the frame underneath to make it all work. The finished deck is a standout outdoor space that turned the backyard into somewhere the family actually wants to spend time.
Project Overview
At 12x8m, this was a substantial build with a design to match. We went with co-extrusion walnut composite decking from Home Excel Innovations, chosen for its rich colour and low upkeep, then laid it in a custom dual-pattern layout for a look you won't find on an off-the-shelf deck. To pull that design off cleanly across a space this size, we used custom framing strategies underneath, mixing an aluminium subframe with treated pine to get the strength, spacing, and board direction the pattern needed. The result is a seamless, one-of-a-kind deck built to last.

Our Process
Consultation & Design
Met with Richard after he reached out through our Facebook ad wanting a better backyard space.
Designed a custom dual-pattern layout to give the 12x8m deck a unique, standout look.
Custom Frame Engineering
Planned a framing strategy built around the dual-pattern design rather than a standard grid.
Combined an aluminium subframe with treated pine to hit the strength and board spacing the pattern demanded.
Subframe Build
Set the subframe square and level across the full 12x8m footprint.
Positioned bearers and joists to support the changing board directions of the dual pattern.
Decking Installation
Laid co-extrusion walnut composite boards from Home Excel Innovations.
Worked the dual-pattern layout carefully so the joins sat clean and seamless.
Finishing Touches
Tidied the edges and cleaned up the site once the boards were down.
Walked Richard through caring for the new deck so it keeps its colour and finish long-term.
